Bicycle Safety
With so much beauty and nature to see, it proves why many bicyclists use the county’s trials and vistas. Whether you’re an experienced bicyclist or haven’t been biking for awhile, be sure to keep these tips in mind.
Always be predictable when you’re on your bicycle. What we mean by “predictable” is make sure that drivers can predict your movements. Remember that traffic laws apply to bicyclists too. Also be sure to drive defensively and be sure to expect unexpected events. Bicyclists are more vulnerable to accidents.
It’s a very good idea to wear a helmet. For individuals who are 18 or younger, it is required to wear a helmet. Be sure to wear protective gear and other visible clothing.
Be sure to obey traffic signs, laws, and signals. If there is a red light, you would stop at the red light just like you were driving a vehicle.
Do not pass vehicles to the right. Wherever you are riding, be cautious, even when you’re in a bike lane. When you’re approaching an intersection or a driveway, be cautious and don’t overtake a car on its right. There is the chance that the vehicle may turn right in front of you.
In narrow lanes, be sure to ride in the middle. When the narrow road ends, be sure to move to the right. Depending on traffic conditions, it’s a friendly gesture to pull over and let other vehicles pass you when the road narrows.
When turning on your bicycle, be sure to use hand signals. Signaling isn’t just a self courtesy; it’s also to protect yourselves.
Be sure to always follow lane markings. If a lane marking turns right, do not go straight through it.
Also be sure not to ride against traffic. Vehicles aren’t usually looking for bicyclists riding on the wrong side of the road.
Riding on sidewalks are prohibited. Pedestrians always have the right of way. Give them a warning before passing.
Be sure to think ahead when driving. Look ahead and figure out what traffic may do. Be sure to watch for cars, rocks in the road, people, etc. Learn to look behind your shoulder without losing your balance or swerving.
There is a chance that you may need to stop suddenly. Be sure to keep both hands on the brakes.
Keeping these tips in mind will help in preventing bicycle accidents.
